An interview isn’t an interrogation. It’s a two-way read, and the candidates who get offers act like they’re evaluating the company as hard as it’s evaluating them.
- Use the STAR format for behavioral questions so each story lands with a clear problem, action, and result. If your stories tend to ramble, behavioral questions are where most people quietly leak points.
- Ask about team dynamics and the real challenges of the role. The questions you ask signal how you think.
- Take notes. It shows you’re engaged, and it hands you specific material for the thank-you note.
- Near the end, ask the question almost nobody asks: “Is there anything about my background that gives you pause?” That surfaces the objection while you can still answer it.
- Confirm the timeline and the next steps before you walk out.

After the Interview: Win the Follow-Up Gap
Most candidates go silent after an interview and call it patience. Meanwhile, the one who follows up well stays top of mind while the decision actually happens.
- Send a thank-you within 24 hours. Reference something specific from the conversation, never a template.
- If a week passes with no word, follow up once. Keep it short and polite, with zero groveling.
- Keep interviewing elsewhere. One promising round isn’t an offer, and projecting toward the finish line is how people quietly stop preparing.

In other words, don’t treat one good conversation like a done deal. Treat it like a single round in a longer game.
When You Get the Offer: Don’t Say Yes on the Call
An offer is the one moment in the whole process where the power sits firmly in your hands. So don’t waste it by accepting on the spot.
- Ask for 24 to 48 hours to review. Nobody reasonable pulls an offer over a single day.
- Look up the real market rate before you respond, so your number is grounded in data instead of nerves.

- Get everything in writing before you resign anything.
- Give proper notice at your current job, because burned bridges have long memories.
